Making the intention - Niat (Niy-yat)

Animated Doa's Here

There is nothing more special than the sounds of children reciting the Quran. Here you can view seven important Doa's that both you and your children can learn this Ramadhan.

As in all other Islamic teachings, making one's intention (niat) clear for a particular religious undertaking is essential in order to self-reinforce that the action fulfilled is in obedience to Allah swt. Simply put, niat means the resolution in the heart to do something or speaking it aloud.

On the same note, the concept also applies when a Muslim resolves to fast in the holy month of Ramadhan. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: "There is no fast for the person who did not intend to fast from the night before." (Reported by Abu Daud).

Therefore, it is only imperative for one to determine the intention during the night and every night prior to the day of fast. In fact, the intention may even be made just a moment before dawn (Fajr). So, if you plan to fast this Ramadhan and in need of a quick recap of the recitation of the niat, here they are in two forms, short or complete.

Na-wai-tu-saw-ma-Ra-ma-dhan
Translated to Malay: “Sahaja aku puasa Ramadhan.”
Meaning: I, therefore, intend to observe fast during the month of Ramadhan.

Na-wai-tu-saw-ma-kha-din-an-ada-i-far-dhu-ra-ma-dhana- ha-dzi-his-sa-na-ti-lil-lahi-ta-a'la
Translated to Malay: “Sahaja aku puasa esok hari menunaikan fardhu Ramadhan pada tahun ini kerana Allah Ta‘ala.”
Meaning: I, therefore, intend to observe fast the day after to fulfill the obligatory Ramadhan fast this year in obedience to Allah swt.
